Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery to Improve Your Sagging Eyelids
What is a blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids.
Surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids. In our facility, we perform upper lid blepharoplasty.
Upper eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes and is minimally invasive.
Specifically, upper eyelid surgery can treat:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the eyelid
- Heaviness of the eyelids with decreased visual fields
Eyelid surgery candidates
In general, good candidates for eyelid surgery include:
- Healthy individuals who do not have a life threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
- Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for eyelid surgery
- Individuals without serious eye conditions (e.g. dry or teary eyes)
Eyelid surgery steps
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. Most upper eye blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia.
Eyelid incisions typically are closed with:
- Removable sutures
- Surgical tape
In some cases we may suggest the use of a laser or chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the lower eyelids.
Closing the incisions
The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed so the resultant scars are well concealed within the natural structures of the upper eyelid region.
Eyelid surgery recovery
During your eyelid surgery recovery, ointment and cold compresses may be applied, and in some cases your eyes may be loosely covered with gauze, after the procedure is completed.
You will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for your eyes, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site, and when to follow-up.
Initial healing may include some swelling, bruising extending below the eye, irritation or dry eyes. Irritation at the incision sites is also possible. The sutures may be visible during the healing period.
Eyelid surgery results
The results of eyelid surgery will improve as swelling and bruising subside revealing a better-defined eyelid and a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.
While eyelid surgery can be expected to correct certain conditions permanently, you will continue to age naturally. Life-long sun protection and non-invasive maintenance treatments like Pelleve will help to maintain your results.
Although good results are expected from your procedure, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and other treatments may be needed to enhance your results.
If you have loose or sagging skin, puffiness in the eyelids, or fine wrinkles of the eyelid, call us for a consultation. You may be a candidate for other upper eyelid blepharoplasty or other treatments like Pelleve for Eyes or SmartSkin Eyes. Call 703.222.0173.
